Malinche Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Malinche - Research Paper ExampleAccording to Hampton,1 Malinche was born to chief Oluta, who was a member of the regal house of the Aztecs in 1502. 2 Her father died when she was still very young. According to the culture of her people, she was the doctor heir of her fathers wealth and position as the chief. This, however, never happened. Malinches mother remarried and had a son with her stepfather. Her mother and stepfather then formulated a plan and sold her to slave traders, for her son to remain the sole heir of the throne. In her plan, Malinches mother took advantage of the death of one of her slaves daughters. She blackmailed this slave and ended up burying the slaves daughter as Malinche. 3 The slave was told to remain silent, or be sent away with the merchants who were buying slaves. 4 Not all sources concur on Malinches origin. However, it has been established by Joan Hershafield that she was a Nahuatl with the original name of Malimalli. Her province of birth was Coazacu alco. According to the author, stories of Malinches slave life that led her to Cortes are contradictory. On the one hand, Lee Stacy presents Malinche as a member of the royal house of the Aztecs and the legal heir of her fathers throne as do sources in the previous paragraph. However, on the other hand, Hamptons contradicts that information, blackmails the family relations of Malinche, and argues that she was the daughter of a slave. The translation process was long-drawn-out, involving the Spanish, Mayan, and Nahuatl languages. When Cortes wanted to communicate with Nahuatl speakers, among whom were the influential Mexica or Aztec people, he would first propound Jeronimo de Aguilar, who would then translate into Mayan for La Malinche, who then further translated Cortes statement to the Nahuatl speakers, those reply was communicated by the reverse process. Due to this three-way interaction, the Nahuatl-speakers called her Malintzin. The Spanish upon hearing the natives calling her Malintzin, tried and true calling her the same, but their mispronounced version was Malinche. 5 Hampton tells us that La Malinches father placed a golden necklace around the little girls neck and said, That this necklace will be the sign forever that shows you are a member of the Royal Aztec house, and your name is Malintzin. 6 The Mexican citizens considered Malinche a traitor because she was Cortes working girl and was his translator. When she was baptized, she adopted a new name because she had no choice. Having been sold by her own mother into slavery, she had no choice but to obey the ways of slavery. slaveholding led her into Cortes hands. Castillo, Bernal, Janet Burke and Humphrey tell us that Malinche that she was under captivity in Maya before being offered to Cortes as a war trophy by the Maya people. 7 Cortes wanted to conquer Mexico no matter what. It was one of his targets. Malinche, therefore should, not be blamed for some other persons political and individualised i nterests. Appreciation should be given to Malinche for making negotiations possible. 8 Levesque suggests that Malinche willingly offered herself to Cortes, making her a betrayer to Mexico. 9 She is considered a representation of Mexicos Eve, mans first other and Christian history

How do americans view morocco as a touristic destination Research Paper

How do americans view morocco as a touristic destination - Research Paper ExampleThis essay discusses that Morocco, for its close proximity to atomic number 63 and Africa, and also for its colorful culture and geography, enjoys a considerable number of tourists from Europe and other parts of the world. Also, the Moroccan government has been taking aggressive steps to amend its position as a tourist destination. World Tourism Organization in Tourism Highlights 2011 reports that despite the occasional issues like Tsunami and earthquakes, there was a 5% growth in world tourism. As a result of these aggressive steps, the percentage of international tourists to Morocco rose by 18.8% between 2008 and 2010. Admittedly, the same trend was glaring in the case of Americans too. As Kiesnoski (2008) points out, there was a 30% rise in the number of American tourists to Morocco on an annual basis and it seems that though traditionally America had been hostile to Morocco, the situation is impro ving due to a large number of reasons. However, Morocco has to go a long way to become a likely destination of tourism for Americans. Admittedly, Morocco has relatively good relations with the U.S. from of old. The nation is the oldest friend of America in the Middle East despite its non-NATO status. So, since 1957, the US Government has been running(a) along with the Moroccan authorities to improve the lives of Moroccans. The second point that makes Morocco different from the Middle East nations is the different cuisine and traditions. It happened because Morocco has the relics of Arab, French, Spanish and Portuguese traditions. Probably, as a result of all these, one can see that nation is not as calamitous as its Middle East neighbors are. While other nations were false upside down by citizens calling for revolution, and as the rulers of those nations retorted with military and weapon resulting in mass killings, Morocco witnessed peaceful agitations which are legally allowed a nd a peaceful referendum from the exponent offering limited monarchic power. In the opinion of Coskun (2011), another important point is that unlike other Islamic nations which want to end the rule of monarchs, some of the electorate in Morocco expressed total trust in the King. Thus, according to the Financial Times (2011) report, by adopting a constitutional monarchy like that of Spain or the UK, which is politically brusk and economically liberal, Morocco stands farther ahead of its Arab companions. The Potential of Morocco as a Tourist Destination Morocco always attracted backpackers for the diversity it offered. The very first element is the cultural tourism it offered. Tourists to Morocco get a chance to experience the various languages, cultures, dresses, and lifestyles (Oxford Business Group, 2007). As infoplease.com reveals, Americans have an affinity towards cultural sites and art galleries and museums. Nearly 30% of tourists from America chose such places in 2004 (Int ernational destinations of American tourists, 2004). Admittedly, there are eight UNESCO sites already in Morocco and another 20 sites are already in the consideration of UNESCO. That means traditions and cultures testament remain as a matter of attraction in future too (Morocco, n.d). To illustrate, the one who reaches Morocco is perplexed by the large web of medinas. The medinas of Essaouira and Marrakech are examples. other important factor that attracts tourists to Morocco is fine sandy beaches of Morocco. In other words, the beaches of Morocco are at least as beautiful as those in Europe. Thirdly, the nation also offers deserts, just like Africa. That means the one who wants to enjoy a ride on camel-back through the Saharan desert can do the same in Morocco. These elements are followed by mountains and colorful streets. Thus, it becomes evident that Morocco has everything as it is a perfect combination of various elements which make it a unique destination (Morocco Department of Tourism,

The divergent approaches of consensus and conflict and what approach is the most appropriate lens with which to understand crimes dust to be discussed today, with the debates evolving to meet more modern and complex contemporary problems. It is imperative to begin by defining the concepts. Reid (119) defined the consensus approach as one that views the emerge norms and laws of cabaret as representative of the common feeling about what is right and proper that is, they represent a con sensus of viewsa mechanism for maintaining social order. It looks at society as a same whole, without factions or frictions, and making a collective determination on what is right and what is wrong. For example, taking a very recent incident, the biting punishments meted against the London street rioters might be deemed appropriate among proponents of the consensus theorists indeed, the destruction of private property and petty larceny go against collective values and the State mustiness bear down heavily upon those who seek to trample those values. In contrast, the proponents of the conflict theory look at society not as a homogenous whole, but as one wracked by class fault lines. Huckleberry Finn and The Catcher in the Rye essay Essay Example for Free

huckleberry Finn and The Catcher in the Rye essay EssayThe novels The Adventure of Huckleberry Finn and The Catcher in the Rye are both set in times where the expectations of society differed from the ones of today. Huckleberry Finn is set in the late 1800s, pre USA civil war and in a time where sla actually was an accepted occurrence and the execute of a slave was seen as legally and morally wrong. This was also a time in which church attendance and education were seen as tokens of respectability. A green boy, the eponymous character, Huck, seeks to reject all that he regards as oppressive and cruel in order to establish an alternative life as a wanderer, far-off from adult control. The Catcher in the Rye, on the other hand, was set in the late 1940s, a time when teenagers were just beginning to gain their avouch lives and being allowed much freedom than ever before. The picaresque novel gives the reader an insight into middleclass life in New York in the 50s and how one bo y felt trapped by the expectations of his parents and school. His period of comparative freedom leads to unexpected consequences as he falls victim to depression and eventual supervision in an institution, putting paid forever to his dreams of freedom. Both novels pre move the themes of freedom and escape valve and the selected extracts portray incidents in the characters lives which focus on this theme. In both of the extracts, the characters are pretending to be someone else, Huckleberry Finn a boylike girl and Holden Caulfield taking a false identity. The reader may infer from this that by assuming a different and off-key identity, the two boys slew escape from their own lives ones that are full of problems and worries. Escaping their lives allows them both to live a subatomic more freely, even if just for a lowly while. However, Huckleberry Finn and Holden take on their new identities for different reasons. For instance, Huckleberry Finn assumes the alternative identity in order to travel across town without being recognised by anybody, as he was supposed to have died non long before. some other reason he had to pretend to be a girl is to protect his and Jims safety. Holden on the other hand, assumes the alternative identity in order to befriend people he meets on his transit without the people realising that he should put away be at school. Various audiences of the two novels would interpret and receive the occurrences in the extracts very differently. For example, the audience of Huckleberry Finn would be alarmed at Huck escaping, living with a slave and then(prenominal) dressing as a girl. This is because the changes in society since Huckleberry Finn was written are significant. In the late 1800s, young boys were to be well educated and then sent off to be a successful businessman, not to escape and run amok. Slaves were also seen as inferior and a possession and anybody helping them was breaking the law. Another thing that the different audi ences would feel differently most is the fact that Jim gets called a nigger quite often. An audience of the 1880s would accept that as normal as they were used to hearing it, whereas an audience of the 2000s would be shocked by this, as the word nigger has a very malicious meaning nowadays and is con posturered a racist insult due to the equality rights now in fluided in the majority of society, due to the word undergoing perjoration. The audience of Catcher in the Rye would probably not be surprised at the behaviour that Holden employs, as teenagers in the late 1940s were gaining a new sense of freedom and the dangers of letting your children out into the reality unsupervised had not yet been considered. They also would accept that he might befriend any stranger that he comes across. However in the 40s there still existed traditional views about respect for authority although they were gradually evaded. His parents however do not approve of him staying in the hotel by himself. In t he 2000s however, we would frown upon a young teenager travelling around alone, talking to strangers and booking a hotel room in a large city. The maturity of the two different characters is also very different.Although Holden wants and tries to be mature, the reader very quickly sees that he is in actual fact very childish and naive. This could be so that he can escape the realities of adult life, and stay in his idealistic childs world forever. Despite this, he does attempt to seem more of an adult by exploitation more taboo language and more complicated language around people who he would like to impress, like the females in the Lavender Room. For example, he says Im twelve, for Chrissake.Im big for my age. Although the word Chrissake, which is the words Christs sake after undergoing elision and with Holdens idiolect, is not considered taboo now, it was still frowned upon in the 1940s, as some sectors of society were still highly religious. Another taboo word he used a lot is G oddamn. again this word, which is the words God damn that have also undergone elision and are with Holdens idiolect, is no longer considered taboo or offensive, due to the change in society over time. This language choice illustrates Holdens immaturity as it shows that he believes that using taboo words and more complicated language forget make him look more grown up, when in actual fact it simply makes him seem barbaric and pretentious. Huck, on the other hand seems quite homey with his maturity level, which is one that seems to fluctuate. For instance, he seems to treat the whole journey in the novel as an adventure, one that fuels his child-like imagination as is shown when Huck plays a humbug on Jim. He says I went to the cavern to get some, and found a rattlesnake in there.I killed him, and curled him up at the foot of Jims blanket, ever so natural, thinking thered be some fun when Jim found him there. This illustrates his immature side as children are more likely to play pr anks and find them amusing. Another way that Twain shows Hucks immaturity and failed education is through his speech, as Twain uses elision in depicting Hucks speech and gives him a very vehement idiolect and dialect. One instance of this is Who done it? weve heard considerable about these goings on, down in Hookerville, but we dont know who twas that killed Huck Finn. Huck uses the word twas instead of saying it was. Using elision as strong as this also shows us how badly educated Huck is, despite the attempts of Widow Douglas to correct this. However, you do get to see the more mature side of Huck. One example of this is when he makes plans for his escape from his father. He makes a list of the things he needs and even fakes his own death so that he can never be found. This shows his maturity because he has the initiative to put the plans into place and fool the people he is escaping from.Another example would be when he treats and considers Jim to be his friend, as it is obvious that he has to ignore society and make his own decision to befriend someone who could potentially get him into trouble with the law. Also, he has to get across a moral dilemma when deciding whether to escape with Jim, or hand him over to Widow Douglas, to whom Jim rightfully belongs. The fact that Jim is a possession of someone else would shock modern audiences as they are not used to this due to the change in society. This particularly shows his maturity because he was making a decision about somebody elses life as well, as Jim would have been sold on if returned to Widow Douglas, therefore thwarting his plan to find his family. The decision that Huck had to make had consequences beyond his control and Huck was fully and completely aware of this whilst making the choice. The central characters in the two novels respond to the theme of escape in different but not quite contrasting ways. For Huckleberry Finn, the journey he goes on allows him to grow up and realise what he wants for himself in the future.Hucks resolution to embrace traditional societal values by resuming his studies shows he has come to a positive decision about his future. On the other hand, for Holden the journey is a reality check, as it shows him that he is not ready for the outside and adult world because he hadnt even got the simple childs world right. He saw life as a game, and was stubbornly naive. His loss of autonomy at the end of the novel shows loss of dreams of freedom and little hope of escape from the downward spiral he has found himself in along the way.
